July 25, 2010: Another race day has come and gone! This one was hot, muggy, and soggy. Results are listed and feedback has been good. As mentioned in the club email, thank you to all who helped out with an extra special thank you from Joe and Lisa to Nancy Danisek who was a huge help. Our sponsor has already agreed to sponsor again next year which is a compliment to all our club and volunteers for puttin on an event that Summa Wadsworth-Rittman is proud to be a part of. For those not at the race this year, the sponsor rep noted that he and his wife were inspired last year at the race and began walking together and eating better....and lost over 70 pounds combined. Again, a huge compliment to the club for setting a good example in the community and we thank CEO Tom DeBord and his wife for sharing their inspiring story. See you all soon at the Family Fun event!
***Special Note***We learned at our race that our own John McCarroll competed at the Senior Olympics placing 2nd in both the 1500m and 800m (I don't have an excact time but know his 800 time was around 3:00!) which earns him a spot at Nationals in Houston. He has yet to compete in the 10,000, but given his track record (literally!) he'll most likely be competing in the 10k in Houston too! Good Luck John!
July 21, 2010: It's almost race day! As usual race entries pour in during the last week. The 10k entries are up significantly and the relay are down significantly. It all balances out to be nearly the same entries at this point last year. We are considering dropping the relay next year since it's numbers are so low and it makes up most of our costs. In regards to the 10k entries...we've got some speed demons signed up! Word of the cash prize has clearly gotten out! All volunteers should report to Lisa no later than 7 am, unless you're helping with race day sign up, then that's 6:30. A reminder to RSVP to Deb about the Family Fun Picnic. Also, an email has gone out to all members regarding a special night to honor Connie Gardner's phenomenal Badwater performance on Aug 2nd as Second Sole.
July 12, 2010: Congrats to Connie Gardner! She place second overall female at the Badwater Ultramarathon! The race is 135 miles through Death Valley with temperatures hitting nearly 120 degrees! We could not be more proud of you!
July 12, 2010: We have a few big announcements...as I type this our own Connie Gardner is competing in the Badwater Ultramarathon (135 miles through 120+ degrees heat through Death Valley)! You can follow her on the Badwater website (www.badwater.com) but be warned because it keeps crashing due to heavy traffic. John McCarroll will be competing in the senior Olypics in the next few weeks showing off his times that put people half his age to shame! Also, just got word that JB Burns has won an entry to the Kona World Championship Ironman triathlon! All are amazing and noteworthy accomplishments! Good luck to all of you and may the pace be with you!
July 7, 2010: Wow! What a busy month! It's 5k season and as you can tell from Facebook updates, our members have been coming out in full force! The sweltering heat hasn't seemed to deter anyone. Race entries continue to come in for the Double Trouble 10k. All awards and shirts have been ordered...just all that last minute planning to go! We hope for good weather. The family summer outing is just around the corner too. Please be sure to get your children's tshirt sizes in to Deb VERY soon as we will only be ordering shirts for kids that we have recieved confirmation of. Lastly, John McCarroll was kind enough to take photos at the recent Sizzler races. Please find the link below!

May 28, 2010: It has been brought to my attention that my May update for this site was missing. I had submitted an update the Wednesday following Cleveland and have spoken with a few members that recalled reading the update. However, sometime between then and now it has gone missing. I had a member email some info that I knew I had updated so when I called the company I was informed that they had a server issue and when they updated our site they used their back up rather than the most recent submission. They also said that they were not able to retrieve my recent submission (mind you this discussion is taking place between me and some guy in the Philipinnes). I apologize to those who did not get to read the original submission and since my notes are long gone from submission, let me try to do this from memory...
Firstly, it seems that club members had put a long, cold, Ohio winter to good use because everyone knocked it out of the park! Of special note was Ladd Clifford who qualified for Boston with a PR of 3:17. It was only a matter of time before Ladd qualified. After an amazing 2009 with multiple marathons and ultras, it appears that he intends to continue his streak of accomplishments through 2010! Dan Horvath completed his 100 marathon at Cleveland, which incidently was his first years ago. A celebration from his running family was had at Second Sole where he recieved recognition for his very inspirational accomplishment. New member Scott Steutzer completed his first half marathon and enjoyed it so much, he's planning for another. Matt Young ran the 5k the day prior and won the whole thing with a 16:16. Many PR's were set at Cleveland, congrats to all for your achievements. Fo the non-runners...Nancy Danisek was kind enough to collect warm up gear for our runners so they had one less thing to worry about. Joe Herbert volunteered his services at the finish line med tent providing Active Release for the runners in need. Many club members sought him out (line jumping is a club perk!) and Joe thought it was pretty neat to work on a former Biggest Loser contestant as well as a national record holder for the marathon and former Olympian.
Also, in the original submission there was a welcome to all new members so I hope I was able to retrieve all your forms and get you back on the Roster.
We are in heavy planning phases for the our race. Of note this year is that we are awarding $100 to the male and female 10k winners and a $50 bonus for a new 10k course record! We also are price comparing to have pub glasses as awards. Some of you may remember that we gave glasses to the top winners last year and got such positive feedback that we are hoping to give glasses to the age group awards as well. An added perk is that instead of dealing with leftover medals we will have leftover custom glasses that can be snatched up by our members. First dibs to the members who volunteer!
Lastly, we are also sad to say that Michele Coleman who has been with this club literally since day one is moving to Colorado with her family. Michele has done so much for the club serving as treasurer and most of her work was behind the scenes so many probably have no idea how much she has done over the past few years. We are sad to see her go and wish her well. She'll be running at altitude now so she is entertaining coming back to run Columbus next year and smoke it! Best of luck to the Coleman family and we will miss you!
April 28, 2010: Great job to EVERYONE that ran Boston. Literally every person from the club that ran did an outstanding job! Welcome to new members Christina Sparks of Brunswick who found us via the net and to Brad Holzinger of Medina who found us via Second Sole. Good luck to Marsha Clifford and Janet Sprout in their marathon this weekend in Illinois. Ladd Clifford is being a good guy and serving as a pacer for Janet. (Hope your cold has cleared up by then Marsha!) Good luck also to everyone doing the Flying Pig this weekend in the club's first destination race. Reminder that the van leaves at 12:00 as mentioned in your update emails. Can't wait to hear everyone's stories when they come back! There's some rumors that we may have one or two more Boston qualifiers after this weekend.....
April 14, 2010: Good luck to Dan Derosha, Roberta Gangl, Delores Manhoff, Deb Scheel (1st Boston), Matt Young, and Dan Horvath as they tackle Boston! We hope you have great weather, great experiences, and time for some good "chowdah" afterwards! Congrats to Roy Heger and Shannon Fisher! The ran in the McNaughton 100 and 50 miler respectively. Roy finished 4th male overall and Shannon finished 6th female overall. Of note....this is not an easy course! Welcome returning to Bill Damman, who has run Boston in the past.
The Kids 5k Challenge has about a half dozen kids interested in taking on the Sizzler. We hope to have some more take on their first race so let us know if anyone is interested!
March 24, 2010: There's been some updates in upcoming events so be sure to check out that page as well as some updated photos. Welcome to new members Debbie and Jeff Hicks! They are both teachers and Debbie is a 4X Boston Qualifier. Welcome to you both! To our members please consider attending the Pick Up Day event being held by the Police Dept. to celebrate Earth Day. They help out so much for the race it would be a great gesture on our part to help them. Be sure to wear your MCRR shirt!
March 3, 2010: Wow! What a month....but spring must be around the corner because we've had a whole bunch of new additions to the club! Welcome to all our new members! You have been added to a Roster and Joe sent out a Welcome email and copy of the most recent newletter. Our club t-shirts have arrived, thanks to the efforts of Jeannine Nicholson. We hope to see them often at races. The Last Chance for Boston marathon and half this past weekend saw 20 of our club runners with 9 of them posting PR's! Of note was club member Matt Young who won the whole thing as a training run for Boston next month...must be nice! Everyone did well and thankfully the weather held out. Given some of the times that members put up for a mid-winter race we can expect some great times for the warm weather and probably some more Boston Qualifiers! As I input the new members on the Roster I noticed there are alot of 10 + minute people...so don't be afraid to hit a group run! Some people only the really fast people show up to group runs. UNTRUE!
Cincy people...as our race date gets closer we will be firming up a departure time for Saturday. We have one member doing the Pump and Run half so we will make sure that we get down in time for that! At present we have 9 running in some form at the Flying Pig and 6 will be traveling in the club van. We still have a few on the fence but have room should they decide to come.
Lastly, we had some fun news that Lisa Herbert placed second nationally in the Road Runner Club of America's Journalism Excellence Awards for Club writer. To explain, our club is a member of RRCA, and they have annual awards for national, state, local things like race director, written newsletter, e-newsletter, race, website, etc. For club writer, a collection of three essays must be submitted. In the first few years of the running club, Lisa did the newsletter and wrote many Running Shorts. Joe submitted his three favorite Running Shorts and Lisa ended up taking second nationally! The funny thing was that she had no idea thanks to an email snafu. Joe had assumed since they had never heard anything, nothing had ever come of it. Turned out Lisa had been invited to the National Awards Conference in Cincinnati! This was all found out when Lisa was contacted this year to serve on the RRCA National Panel for Journalism Excellence as a judge. She is up to her eyeballs in reading submissions from all categories from around the country! Pretty cool though! Given that she is a judge, our club was not eligible for awards this year due to conflict of interest. That being said when the nomination process begins next year... we are so in! Joe and Lisa have already notified Marsha that they are nominating her for Outstanding Email newsletter - Local Club. When we get the notice that nominations are open we will let the club know so they can also nominate for other awards if they wish. Lisa is digging up the three essays for a re-release since we have so many new members now. So get those Running Short submissions into the newsletter...you never know what'll happen!
February 5, 2010: Just a reminder to have your t-shirt order postmarked for tomorrow. Check out Craig's List for an awesome gym closing sale. Commercial grade treadmill and equipment at great prices. Email info was sent to all club members. We are happy to announce that we have got word from Michele that Summa Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital has again agreed to serve as our title sponsor this year. The date chosen for the Double Trouble Road Race is July 25th so as not to conflict with Burning River 100. Joe and Lisa are already busy setting up legal/insurance coverage, meetings with the township, police, etc. This year we are planning on a purse to the first place male and female 10k overall winners with a bonus for a new course record. We hope this encourages a large competitive field to help build a great race reputation.
February 4, 2010:Last weekend marked the first Annual Dinner for the club. It was hosted at the Blue Heron Country Club and was gracefully organized by Debbie Scheel and Nancy Danisek. Anyone who has ever had to organize something of this scale knows that it is quite an undertaking! Great job ladies! It was a borderline red carpet event since most of the time we see each other in sweaty clothes! Everyone looked great...we clean up pretty good! An extra thanks to those who donated door prizes. Welcome to new members Jason Kolecki and Boston Qualifier Jack Reilly. I also know that Tom joined at our dinner but I haven't got your last name and email yet so don't worry...I'll get you on the Roster! Tom will also be joining us at the Flying Pig. We will be reserving the van in the next week or so. We have 6 traveling with the club and 9 runners total running. If anyone else is considering a Flying Pig event please let Joe and Lisa Herbert know so they know how big a van to rent. A reminder that new member Jason has a charity featured in the prvious entry. If you are running in the Cleveland Marathon you can touch base with Jason about fund raising.
January 23, 2010: The holidays have come and gone. Everyone is settling back into a semi normal routine...training for spring races and burning off some extra holiday pounds! Double Trouble work for the July race is under way, our new marathon/half marathon training group is kicking off this weekend, and new members are joining! Welcome to Danielle West! We hope to see you at some events! Upcoming is the Kettle Bell class this coming Monday. We can all discover those lesser used arm and core muscles! Our club dinner is also just around the corner. We've been getting frequent emails from Debbie updating us with the plans. Sounds like it will be a great time. Check out the Group Run tab for more info on the Marathon training group. The training will be suitable for any upcoming full or half and even if you're not doing a race it'll give you a chance to run with friends. Speaking of upcoming events, we were contacted by Jason Kolecki who is an avid runner and father of a young child who battled cancer. He is the founder and CEO of the Little Jason Childhood Cancer Foundation and is fundraising in affiliation with the Cleveland marathon. He is also a Medina resident. For more info you can go to www.littlejason.org and http://www.clevelandmarathon.com/Charity_Partners/. Runners love to run for a good cause so check it out. Most of us have had loved ones affected by cancer and most of us are parents who could not imagine watching their own child have to endure so much. Look at it this way, by fund raising for causes as important as this it will give you an extra reason to not hit the snooze button and get up and run!
December 23, 2009: Welcome to new members Abby Elliott and Connie Gardner. Many of you already know Connie from our track work outs. She is an incredible ultra runner who is nationally ranked. Our community is so fortunate to have her as a resource for running advice and we are priveldged to have her as a member. Our recent events have been well attended, including the Girls' Night Out beading party and the private members only sale at Second Sole. Second Sole was great and hosted pizza, drinks, cookies and great sale prices for the members. It was a definite do again! Happy Holidays to all and may the New Year bring you happiness, injury free running, and new PR's!

December 12, 2009: Welcome to new member Jill Kahle! We hope to see you at the upcoming private after hours sale at Second Sole on the 19th. Check out "Upcoming Events" for more details!
November:23, 2009: Congrats to Matt Young for his 2:36 finish at the Philadelphia Marathon yesterday! Not that 2:36 isn't amazing enough, but he did it with an awful cold, setting a new PR. Akron may have their blue line marking the course but Matt gave Philly a slime line thanks to his cold! If anyone ran in the Fall Classic be sure to let us know!
November 18, 2009:Thanks to all those that attended the meeting Monday. It was one of our best attended ever. Be sure to cast your vote on the Winter Event! Good luck to Matt Young in Philly. Matt's time has earned him an elite number of elite starting wave perks, etc. Very cool. Most of us are just happy to get half a mushed banana at the finish! We wish him good weather and a great race. Good luck also to members doing the Fall Classic half marathon/5k. That's always a great race with an awesome shirt. There is a cool Turkey Trot posted under upcoming events; be sure to check it out!
November 11, 2009: Winter Event is in the planning stages. We have had a number of suggestions ranging from toboganning, wine tasting, and sit down dinners. Some of these events are mid-week while others would be weekend. Please make sure that you voice your opinion on what you'd like. For those of you that prefer not to use Facebook, don't worry, we still hear you and appreciate your input. Feel free to drop an email or give a call. Also, Joe Herbert was recently invited to NERC's monthly meeting as a guest speaker and he was able to pick the brains of the club members to see what works and what doesn't work for their club. Some of their ideas will be shared at our upcoming meeting.
November 2, 2009: Yeah to all who ran in the Inland Trail Marathon this weekend! Drum roll please.............Jean Budowanec finally met her long time goal of breaking 2 hours in the half. YEAH JEAN!!!! That time has been a thorn in her side for a long time now and we are happy to see her meet her goal. Good for you Jean, by the way she also took second in her age group! Great job also to Chuck Dammon and Dan Horvath who both ran outstanding times!
Congrats also to Delores Manhoff for her great performance at the Steamtown Marathon! Congrats to all runners from the run with Scissors Marathon and Double Marathon, Patrick Fisher (3rd overall!!!), Dan DeRosha, Dan Horvath, and Frank Dwyer (Double Marathon participant and personal best time).
Go USA! What a joy to see Meb win the New york City Marathon! Believe it or not that was his first marathon win. Did you know our own John McCarroll was very instrumental in the early years of the New York Road Runners Club? He has great stories to tell if you ever get a chance to talk to him!
Thanks to John McCarroll for his handy camera work. See the hyperlink below for race photos for the Running with Scissors Double Marathon and Single Marathon Events.

October 28, 2009: Congrats to Ladd and Marsha Clifford and Charles Elkins for their outstanding efforts at the Niagara Falls International Marathon. Marsha PR'd by 7 minutes! Ladd has had one heck of a race season; several half marathons, full marathons, and a 107 mile 24 hour race....a well deserved rest is in your future. You have earned that Thanksgiving day turkey my friend! Also, of note is how many new "Beanahs" we have heading to the prestigous Boston Marathon. Check out the Roster to see the highlighted names of those that have earned the right to toe the line in April. Congrats to you all...enjoy the "chowdah"! Congrats also to Tara and Emily Elkins who ran the 5K as a mother and daughter team!
Welcome to new members Jan Roe and Michele Wulff! Jan is a legal secretary from Medina and Michele is a dietition. Both are Medina residents. We are so pleased to have you both and look forward to seeing you at the next group run and/or meeting!
LOST AND FOUND: I still have a nice pair of ladies warm up pants from the Cleveland marathon. Someone handed them to me at the start and we never reconnected. If you'd like your pants (they miss you) please contact Lisa Herbert at joliherb4@neo.rr.com.
October 20, 2009: Thanks to all that attended the meeting last night. Most importantly, a quick update on a runner that was taken ill at the meeting...she is doing fine and after a few hours at the hospital it was unclear as to what caused her anaphalactic reaction. We have spoken with her today and she is well; which we are very happy to hear!
The logo is not a go yet. Still some investigating some shirt options. Once the logo rights are purchased members should be able to put the logo on anything they want. The first order will be for shirts though. The Herberts also know of a woman who does custom embroidery so after the rights belong to the club members can also order half zips, jackets, etc. with the logo embroidered on the front or back. No minimums are required for orders is the present understanding.
In regards to the "Many hands lighten the load" goal for the club...some sub committees will hopefully be in the works soon. So we can have more group runs, members are asked to host an occasional group run. This is something that we've tried in the past but since we have more members now to cover more pace needs our hope is that it will be successful. Presently, there are two pretty consistent group runs that happen weekly. They are posted under Group Runs. Aside from that we'd like members to pick one day out of the month to host a run which would include picking a site, notifying the Newsletter/Website individuals (Marsha and Lisa) and that's it. Well, of course the sponsoring party actually has to be at the group run! Just let us know where, when, how far, and how fast. Tues, Oct 27th at 6pm Jeannine Nicholson is hosting a track work out at Clagget followed up with a light core work out. Other committees looking for helping hands include a scholarship committee, and a membership committee.
A Events Committee will be chaired by Nancy Danisek and Debbie Scheel. Marsha will maintain her duties with the newsletter and Joe and Lisa will maintain their duties as race directors for the Double Trouble and handling day to day operations, Michele will maintain her duties as treasurer. Jeannine Nicholson will be picking up some of the duties of Advertising and Recruitment which includes posting meetings and information in local papers and having info available at local races. Dan Horvath also mentioned that he might pick up submissions for the Post. Incidentally, any news , such as a recent Boston Qualifying race can be sent to the Post at news@thepostnewspapers.com. Janet Sproat has offered to take on some of the responsibilities of the Membership Committee, including setting up a database of members and welcoming new members to the club. It would be nice to have at least two people per committee to "lighten the load". A special thank you to all the "founding members" that have been with the club since the start a few years ago. It has been a true labor of love to get the club to this point and we look forward to continue growth and development. The more members willing to devote some time to the club helps promote the future of the club. We are very grateful of the volunteer efforts given by the members.
Lastly, congrats to the Columbus crew! Ladd CLifford and Robera Gangl served as pacers for other runners while Dan (BQ!) and Heather DeRosha, Jeannine Nicholson, Matt Young, and Janet Sproat and had PR days!
October 12, 2009: Sooooo much to catch up on, where to begin. Firstly, please check out the upcoming meeting tab. We are to looking to expand the events of this club but it will take more than the core of very gracious people that presently make it work. We are looking for some people to help out with some events. Most will only take up small periods of time, like a scholarship selection committee, a Family Event planner, a Holiday Event Planner, etc. Any helping hands are welcomed, especially when it comes to hosting a group run!
Next, Congrats to Dan Horvath and crew for an outstanding first event in the North Coast 24 hour national championship! What an event. A round of applause to all the members that helped out. Shannon Fisher was an excellent "cook" and did terrific planning the menu for the event. No runner could complain that they webt hungry. Dan was remarkably calm and composed. The event was a class act. Also, a tremendous round of applause to out members that participated, Roy Heger, Frank Dwyer, and first timer Ladd Clifford. All did remarkably well and judging from Ladd's first time effort, he is a natural ultrarunner. We were all so sproud of the organizers, volunteers, and runners. What an amazing event on such a large scale. Even Runner's world magazine was there. Our own member John Mc Carroll was on hand for photos for this event and for the recent Towpath marathon. You can go to http://johnnydajogger.smugmug.com/ to view photos. Thanks John!
Aside from some outstanding showings at the NC24, we also had some great performances at the Akron Marathon. There are more details noted in our Member Only Newsletter but the club would like to throw a special round of applause to Debbie Scheel who ran her first marathon at Akron at a 3:49 and came back to run the Towpath this past weekend with a Boston Qualifying run of 3:45! Please remember, our "worker bees" in the club scour events trying to catch familiar names, but the only way to insure that your race times are shared int he community is to email them to Marsha for the newsletter and Lisa for the website. Incidently, we would like to call attention to Denise Young for her First Place Overall Female performance at the recent Alliance Rotary Castle run 10k. Denise also recently ran the famous Peace race in Youngstown and won 4th Ohio female with a time of 40 minutes and change. Speaking of change, her win won her some $$$$$$!
Good luck to all of you getting ready for Columbus. Members who ran last year LOVED the new course...have fun! Also, good luck to the crew training for Niagara, we hope Canada is kind to you!
Bob Daniels and Lisa Herbert are planning on doing the "Tackle the Tower" run in February. Bob is a many times over veteran. Lisa is doing because "it's just so crazy I have to do it once!" Evidently, Bob has the scoop on the perfect place to train. More info once the holidays approach.
Lastly, the feed back on Cincy has been great, we have a lot of interest in the group destination event, some members have already signed up!
Also, let us paraphrase ultrarunner Shannon Fisher after her first marathon experience. "-----the marathon! You guys can keep the -----marathon. I'm sticking with ultras! How do you guys run those --- things?" Well, clearly even though Shannon had a great finishing time, her heart belongs to the ultras. Which is why our sport is so great from a short as 50 meters to a 24 hour race there is a distance for you. Each requires training and dedication and is worthy of respect. So whether it's a 5k , half, marathon, or more....run what makes you happy!
Sept. 23, 2009: Good luck to all our members running Akron! Looks like you should have a nice cool day! Reminder that we are still in need of voulnteers for the North Coast 24 race. Lisa also posted the NC24 on www.marathonguide.com. A very cool website! Congrats to Michele Coleman, Kim Albright, and Lisa Herbert on the recent Air Force Marathon. Hopefully one of them will be willing to submit a Running Short for the newsletter to recap their experience.
The club would like to plan a "Destination Marathon" to the Flying Pig Marathon on May 3. The club will rent a 12 person van and drive members toand from the race. The runners will be responsible for their entry and lodging. So far interested parties are the Herberts, Youngs, Cliffords, and a few others. If anyone is interested in running the half or whole and wants to tag along let us know! We would also like some ideas for family events. Many of our members have young children and we'd like to find a way to do more family events so ideas would be much appreciated!
Lastly, Congrats to Shannon Fisher who knocked the snot out of her recent 50k! We'd lilke to know what her secret is!
August 19, 2009: So are you tired of running in heat and humidity yet? Kudos to the brave souls that braved the heat and humidity of the Perfect 10 miler Sunday. Pulling in outstanding performances and placing in age groups were Debbie Scheels, Matt Young, Ladd Clifford, Patrick Fisher and Dan Horvath. Marsha Clifford, Lisa Herbert, and Nancy Danisek also cut some mean sweats. What a horrible day to race! Congrats also to Denise Young who ran a sub 20 5k on Saturday!
Marsha is need of some info for the newsletter..it's what keeps us connected so share your info. Good luck to everyone training for their fall races. Michele Coleman just did a challenging half at altitude in Colorado! She siad is was beautiful, hot, and hard to breathe but by the end of her week there she had acclimated to the altitude quite a bit. Welcome to new member Ken Law...we hope to se you at some of our events! Keep cool everyone!
August 2, 2009: Wow what a week! The weather held out for our race which went very well thanks to all our volunteers! Joe and Lisa Herbert would like to thank Nancy Danisek for being registration captain and to all who also helped with registration. Special thanks to Jeanine Nicholson for all her help with sponsors. Thanks you to the Budowanec family for helping out with mile splits and to the Ekers family for mile splits and water. Thanks you to Kim and Randy Albright for registration and water. Thank you to the Cliffords for runner traffic through the cul-de sac and for Connie Gardner, Shannon Fisher, and Steve Marshall for assisting with runner traffic on Grande Blvd. (by the way Shannon, the police chief was most impressed with your fearless management of the rogue Trans Am and wants to know if you're available for back up!) Thank you also to all the members that helped direct runner traffic through the turn around at Second Sole. Thanks to Jim Fisher for his Excel sheets for the timing guys (incidentally Jim and Jade had a baby girl named Monica on the Thursday before the race...Congrats to them and new Gramma Shannon and proud Uncle Patrick!) Thanks also for everyone's patience with the website builder bug. What a pain, I could have had the results up by Sunday. By the time tech support got the problem fixed later in the week the Herbert house was in the midst of Pee Wee Football camp. Late night and early morning runs made it hard to find time to get these results up. They have to be done by hand since our website will not integrate a word document. So after a nice long 22 miler today, I am more than happy to sit for a while to get these in. Thank you also to Summa for sponsoring the race and taking an active part in race day. Thank you too to Chief Arbogast and staff for their tremendous support for our race. We could not do it without the police's support! Thanks to everyone for their help! - Joe and Lisa
July 21, 2009: Hey race day is just around the corner! Joe has arranged for a sports photographer to take some pictures of the race so we should have some great shots. We've gotten registrations from all over! Volunteers please find Lisa at Second Sole at 6:00 am preferably but the very latest by 6:30. Welcome to new members Ken and Josh Ekers and John Bechke! Hope to see you all at the race!
Hard core award goes to Michele Coleman! Lisa Herbert, Kim Albright, and Michele are trainiing for the Air Force Marathon and are keep ing tabs on one another. Michele wins the hard core award for getting up multiple time at 4 am to get runs done before work. She also got stung on a recent pace run and did not stop....because she was on a pace run! Marsha Clifford is also training for the Niagara Falls marathon Deb Scheels is training for Akron. There are more of you training for fall marathons or halfs out there so let us know who you are!
Lastly, a big YAHOO to Shannon Fisher who smashed the grand masters record by about 25 minutes at her recent 50K! We know you were training very hard for that o ne and we're glad to see it all pay off for you!
June 30, 2009: Lots of work going on behind the scenes as we prepare for the race! Lots of stuff ordered (Lisa's credit card called to ask if her card had been stolen!) and last minute planning is under way. Sponsor deadlines to be on t-shirt is the 6th of July. Also, Marsha's computer has died (da da daaaaaa, taps are playing sadly) so she asked me to let everyone know of a 12 miler out of their house on Sunday. I don't have a time but you can email direct at ladd2@zoominternet.net. She will also being sending out 2 newsletters during the summer due to the crash. She does such a fantastic job with the newsletter and group runs we hope her new lap top arrives soon!
Great job to everyone at the Matchstick. Randy and Kim Albright and Bob Daniels put on a fabulous race. They make it look so easy. The Herbert family volunteered, Denise Young ran; winning top female from Wadsworth and top in her age group, Ladd Clifford ran a PR, and Nicky Young (age 6) took 4th in the kids mile race showing he has inherited some of his family's running genes! Other members spotted running were Marsha Clifford, Kyle Clifford, Dan Horvath, and Matty Young (age 8, who also put in a great showing in the kids mile). If there was anyone else that we didn't see let us know!
FYI: Road Runners Club of America sent us $10 of a $50 order coupons for their apparel. They are meant to be for members only (as in our club members since we are part of RRCA) per RRCA so if anyone wants some shoot the Herberts an email at joliherb4@neo.rr.com.
June 10, 2009: Never underestimate our little running club! The YOung family informed us the during their trip to the Boston Marathon, they were aboe to re-connect with an old friend, thanks to our club. This person had Googled Matt and clips from our website pulled up along with the Roster which allowed a long lost friend to coordinate a visit in Boston. This friend live in New Hampshire I believe so it was not a long trip to Boston. What a small world. On a funny note, Denise's awestruck meeting with Shalane Flannigan was referrence on Flannigan's Runner's World Blog. She talks of an Ohio family she met in Boston and describes how the whole family came out...Dad ran the 5k...Mom ran marathon... and yep, she's talking about the Young family. When Lisa called to tell Denise she was mentioned, she didn't believe her thanks to a prank phone call Lisa had made pretending to be the Boston Police Department regarding a restraining order against Denise by Flannigan :) Lisa is nervous about the payback on that one!!!
Thanks to Nancy and Michele for attending the race planning meeting. We have lots of little jobs that are looking for helping hands so thanks to all that emailed their desire to help out. We need the most help on actual race day so we will be contacted all who expressed interest. Be sure to check out the race page!
Our meeting for May was Jim Barnett of the Akron marathon, always a favorite! He discussed some changes to the 5 man relay and addressed the water and gel issue from last year. (Turns out the supplier over rode their amount request for the early miles and redirected the water to stops at the end of the course. This resulted in too little water at the beginning and left over at the end). The gel situation will be addressed this year in the form of education, helping the runners of the shorter relay legs why gels are necessary and understanding why and when a runner needs them. This year looks to be a great year for the race with lots of improvements including jackets to marathoners as opposed to shoes. Also, the half marathon course has been changed to improve the now former miserable 11th mile. The most fun about last night was hearing the re-hash of the Cleveland race.
Cleveland Marathon
We had a great turn out of both athletes and supporters from our club for Cleveland, which we have renamed the windy city thanks to blustery conditions. On support crew, collecting warm up clothes, handing out gels, and cheering for our runners were Marsha Clifford, Lisa Herbert, Patrick Fisher and Randy and Kim Albright. It was cold and windy unless you were moving. Lisa and Patrick opted to hide in port-a-potties at mile 14 for awhile to warm up out of the wind. Sad that was an improvement for the weather conditions! Runners for the 10k were Nancy Danisek 57:26 and Tara Elkins 1:04 (husband Charles ran with her). Halfers included Heather Derosha 2:17, Janet Sproat 1:57, Lisa Grafton 2:18,Debbie Scheel 1:41, Jean Budowanec 2:00, and Mary Miller 1:51. Marathoners were Dan Horvath 3:36, Dan Derosha 3:22, Ladd CLifford 3:31, Matt Young 2:37 (yes that is correct 2:37 he came in 5th overall), Don Gaither 4:13, and Sharon Sibilski 4:39. Joe Herbert was set to run the full marathon but had a foot injury at mile 11 and dropped to the half at 1:38 for a nice 13 mile marathon pace run. Foot is doing better but he will not be running for awhile.
May 16, 2009: My how time flies...and so much to fill you in on! Last night our little running club hosted one of the big names in the running world, Bart Yasso. This was a members only event and was on a first come first serve basis due to room/number limitations. We had standing room only as Bart told us stories of running all over the world, took questions, posed for photos and did a book signing for his book. He was a top notch guy and a true testament to why our sport is so great. Some of you may not have known but he got off a plane, spent the day at the expo, then came to our group...he had to be exhausted! We had a variety of pastas, pizza, and breadsticks for everyone as well. Good luck to all our runners tomorrow!!!
Of note too are the happenings from the Nashville Marathon. Charles Elkins ran a half at 2:03. Lisa Grafton ran a full marathon at 5:19, and Marsha Clifford ran a full with pacer and husband Ladd at 4:40. What is of note is that race was freakin' hot!!!!!It was already in the 70's at the start and was in the 90's by the finish. In those temps time goals go out the window and finishing becomes the only goal. For the full details you can talk to Marsha directly but this poor woman went through hell. Several times during the second half of the race Ladd was urging her to seek some medical help. Marsha would like you all to know that she is neither crazy nor stupid and if she had been running alone she most likely would have gone to the med tent but since her husband was right with her the whole way she felt comfortable that she would receive immediate attention if trouble should arise. That being said, once she crossed the finish line she was a limp noodle and Ladd swept her to the med tent where Marsha was packed in ice and given salt. And if you all are worried about her...don't be five days later she ran a 5 k and took second in her age group! Congrats to all our runners who braved the heat and congrats to Ladd for being such a good hubby!
April 22, 2009:What a Boston! A great finish, especially for the women. Our runners did an outstanding job given the strong winds at the end of the course. Denise Young ran a 3:36 and Randy Albright ran a 3:53. We've heard from Denise who states that she felt great the whole race; just some calf cramping at mile 24, but overall she was very happy and notes that the race is just unreal...something you've just got to experience first hand. She met a number of elite runners including her idol Shalane Flanigan. We will spare her some humor at her expense, but we will say according to her husband Matt, Denise was obviously awestruck and used the word "awesome" quite a bit.
Good luck to Marsha and Ladd Clifford and Lisa Grafton as they head off to the Rock-n-Roll Marathon in Nashville this weekend. We hope that the wind is at your back and your feet are swift! Marsha is planning on wearing her running skirt...show'em how tough a girl can be...even in a skirt!
April 19, 2009: We have received an update from our runners in Boston. Matt Young and Kim Albright ran the 5k this morning. Kim ran a 24:52 and Matt ran a 16:38. Of note, Matt took 2nd in his age group and 20th overall, which is amazing given the field. Matt also was standing next to former Olympian and gold medalist Joan Benoit Samuelson at the start which is pretty cool. Randy Albright and Denise Young are ready to go tomorrow. The weather is typical for New England in that it's changing by the hour. One forecast had 36 mph wind gusts. Let's hope that's not the case for our runners. At the very least it will be nice and cool for the race and we hope all goes well. Ladd Clifford ran the Union Hospital half marathon today at a 1:40 as he preps for his marathon in Nashville in a few weeks. He's right on pace for his goal and we hope he and wife Marsha and friend Lisa Grafton all have an easy taper as they ready to take on the Rock-n-Roll marathon!
March 28, 2009: A very warm welcome to new member Mary Miller. Mary is a pharmacist, so between her, and a number of physicans in the club there should be no medical question left unanswered by our members!Don't forget our April meeting will be several weeks early per the request of the speaker. We hope everyone has recovered from our awesome yoga class last week. It was a great workout that left many of us finding muscles that we didn't have!
March 21, 2009: Welcome to new members Julie Good and Shelby Buell! They are an animal keeper and an engineer respectively. We hope to see you at an upcoming group run! The Young's have been busy little bees on the racing front! Denise ran the Mill Creek Distance Classic half marathon as a prep for Boston, in 1:39 placing first in her age group. Her husband Matt ran the Green Jewel 50k, kind of on a whim, and ended up winning the whole race and breaking the course record by more than an hour and twenty minutes. The interesting thing is that Matt used the race as a training run, doing a marathon pace segment and several tempo run segments so he wasn't even really racing it. Maybe he's been racing at the wrong distance at the marathon because for a first time 50k he didn't do too shabby! Good luck to Denise this April as she makes her Boston debut. Good luck also to Randy Albright who also makes his Boston debut this year. Anyone else going to Boston this year let us know because we'd like a group picture of all of you!
March 18, 2009: We have been busy bees! There are lots of updates this session so be sure to check out each page! Member Dan Horvath has been working feverishly on his North Coast 24 Hour Endurance Run. Our club will be helping out so please consider volunteering for this amazing event. Anyone willing to run 24 hours straight is deserving of some cheering and a well run aid station. We need aid station help (especially if CPR certified), pacers, etc. Some club members are throwing their hats in the ring and will be running as participants. Please see Upcoming Events for a link to the event.
Our Double Trouble Race date has been secured with Medina Township police for July 26th. So let the planning begin. Thanks to Michele Coleman for securing Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital as our title sponsor!
March 4, 2009: There's a new group run posted...10 or 17 miler. We have several people in marathon training so hence the big distances. We will also have some smaller distances coming up too so keep chacking back! Many of you are getting ready for Boston too so be sure to use the Forum to coordinate meeting up in Beantown!
February 16, 2009: Ask and you shall receive! Ladd Clifford knocked 17 minutes off his marathon PR and ran a 3:35 at the Last Chance for Boston. His goal was under 3:45 so we'd say he knocked it out of the park. Judging from his splits, he had an ambitious first half that was starting to catch up with him but his wife Marsha ran a bit with him to the end to give him a boost and he ended up finishing with an amazing personal best! Shannon Fisher and Roy Heger both ran terrific times at their 50k in Kentucky this past weekend. There is something in the water out here because our club has a pocket of very talented "ultra" runners that we are very proud of! By the way we are still working on a nick name for Shannon so forward your suggestions! There is a new 5k posted, club meeting updates, as well as a new group run so be sure to explore our other pages!
February 15, 2009: Well, we know that many of you did the Frosty today or the Last Chance For Boston Marathon...so let's hear from you! Many of you are getting ready for Spring halfs or fulls and some of you are getting back on the runs after a long cold winter. Be sure to stay connected via our forum and group runs. Our group runs, especially those before our meetings, are getting very well attended and many of you are doing the same race this spring. So have your own cheering section at your race and let us know which one you're signed up for!
January 27, 2009: What a fantastic gathering last night. With 20 in attendance, and most going on the group run, we had a great turn out. Ideas for an official logo were previewed, race planning for Double Trouble was discussed, and we had a very informative talk from Nicole Davis of NEOFit who offers a 25 week marathon training program for $100. Do the math, it's a great deal! They even supply the Gatorade for the long runs! As a funny aside, Lisa Herbert and parties that shall go unnamed to protect privacy, literally got locked in the library. They were chatting after the meeting's end and lost track of time (shocking, I know, for those that know of Lisa's gift of gab). All of a sudden ALL the lights go out. When they exited the room they found the gate down and locked and no way out. Eventually a cleaning woman was found. The trick was to get her attention since she had an Ipod on. She came over and her answer to every question was "yes". "Are we locked in, Yes. Can we get out, Yes. Can we go out the back door, Yes. Will the alarm sound, Yes. Is there another way, Yes. " You get the picture, we had a bit of a language barrier but eventually were let out the back with a kind "yes". Well at least it makes for a good story!
Lisa Herbert would like to share a fab find...Lisa's dad (a runner from back in the day) got Lisa a few cool runner related gifts for x-mas. The best was a ball cap from LL Bean. It has tiny LED lights built into the bill of the cap. Having run with a head torch or a clip on in the past, this cap is a true delight for anyone who runs in the dark! It weighs no more than any other hat and the LED lights are so small that they really can't be seen. Plus it casts a perfect light that doesn't interfere with your own vision and makes you very visable to cars. Two thumbs up and then some!
January 24, 2009: Our yoga speaker coming up in March has a very extensive running past, including Boston. Joanie Andrews' full bio will be featured in our club newsletter. She's studied yoga for about 9 years and loves the inner peace and wisdom it can provide. From a runner's point of view, Joanie advocates the flexibility and balance that yoga can provide for a runner's body. Joanie owns Half Moon Yoga which just recently celebrated its first anniversary. Half Moon Yoga is located on 3267 Pearl Road, scedule is available at www.asianma.com and Joanie may be reached at 330-242-0219 or at hmyogagirl@yahoo.com.
New favorite word ..."dreadmill", credit to the Albrights for their clever word.
January 19, 2009: Congrats to Shannon Fisher for placing 7th female overall in the Buckeye 50k! Abouth 150 started and only about 60 or so finished thanks to the conditions. Shannon ran a 7h 20min race over some really technical terrain. She was very happy and proud as we all are for her! She's pretty sure that only one other in her age group (50-55) was ahead of her so needless to say, she had a great race! We really need to come up with a good nickname for her! Becky Steiner already has "Wild Woman" because it just suits her too well. Any good name suggestions for Shannon should be put to the Forum because this woman is just a crazy machine that needs a good nickname!
January 17, 2009: A warm welcome ona chilly day to some of our new members! We welcome John McCarroll, who is an amazing person to talk with! He has done more marathons than most can count and he is a true purist. He loves "a runner's race" without large crowds and pomp and circumstance. He is truly inspiring to speak with. Welcome to nurse, Debbie Scheel! We love having members of the health care community because it sends such a positive message to patients about taking control of their health and well being. Also, welcome to Dr. Clifford Sonnie, M.D., Cliff has a very interesting story and is a good friend of the Herberts. He worked as an ER doctor in Cleveland for years and also did occupational medicine. He got frustrated with some aspects of "traditional" medicine and began educating himself on some non-traditional treatments and healing methods. He now operates the Balance of Life Clinic in Medina, where he blends his knowledge of both the traditional and other aspects of medicine to help people achieve optimum health. In his earlier life, or as he puts it "when the earth was still cooling" he was a phenomenal runner. He met the Olympic qualifying standard at that time for the marathon, but was unable to attend the trails thanks to getting drafted. He spent many years away from running until as of late. He has started running again, lost a ton of weight, and has rekindled his love of the sport. We are happy to have him aboard as a resource, and especially as a great story teller! Good luck to all those running in the 50k tomorrow in Peninsula. It should be a balmy 20 degrees, be careful on that ice! And to the runner who elected to go sledding on a sub zero day a few nights before the race, and had a bad landing on her bum and blew out her back...may the force be with you my dear, we'll be pulling for you. Next time we will wrap you in bubble wrap before your next race!

(future fast feet for the Fisher's?)
January 5, 2009: Happy New Years everyone! May the new year bring you all health, happiness, and new PR's! We have news amongst club members, the most important news comes from Jade and Jim Fisher who are expecting their first baby, and yes...that makes Shannon Fisher a Grandma! We will go on record that she will be one of the coolest Grandma's ever! Congrats to the Fisher family and we hope everything goes smoothly and everyone is healthy. Joe and Lisa Herbert will be opening their new office in February and are excited because Joe will have completed his certification for Active Release Technique which is a soft tissue technique for musculoskeltal injuries favored by elite runners. We are working to to get a rep from the Cleveland Marathon in for April since the word ont he street is that it will be an entirely new course this year with lots of changes. We have been group run happy this month and hope to continue. If anyone knows they'll be running at a certain place at a certain time, let us know! We'll post it for you.
December 31, 2008: The weather this A.M. prompted everyone to change their minds on the group run so it will be rescheduled for the new year.
December 30, 2008: This month's group runs have been a huge success, special thanks to the Cliffords! This past weekend we braved the wind for a 8 mile run. We'll meet one more time on New Year's Eve, be sure to check out the Group Run page. The more the merrier!
December 17, 2008: This past weekend's group run was the best attended yet! We had nearly 20 runners of all abilities show up, despite the frigid temps. It was great to put some faces to names and every one seems to pair off well with paces. We even had two non-members show up to check us out. There was an unofficial uniform amongst the women...anyone who has been to Marshall's may have found the Nike core warmers (normally $50) there for $16.99. They were last year's colors. Well, a number of the women running showed up in their new Nike gear. Guess we're all good bargain shoppers too! Given the success of this group run, there will be another this coming weekend. Check the Group Run tab for details!
December 08, 2008: Well, only one lone runner was brave enough to join Joe on the group run this past weekend. The weather actually held out and it was a good run! We have alot in the works for the upcoming months, we are just waiting on some room dates. We just got a call from a yoga teacher/runner who would like to have a meeting in March with a group run and yoga class to follow. Be sure to catch the upcoming group run and check for those room dates coming soon Don't forget any race results need to come to Marsha and Lisa so we can post your bragging rites on the web and newsletter!
November 23, 2008: Well this was a big race weekend for some of you. Please forward your race stories to Lisa and Marsha for newsletter and website props. For those of you that missed the last meeting, Joe and Lisa had a major brain infarct and got their dates confused and missed the whole thing. Deepest apologies. It did however give us the opportunity to explain why. Joe and Lisa are in the process of dissolving their present partnership and opening a private practice in Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital. Their plan is to have a special emphasis on sports related injuries. There is a lot still in the planning phase but that is eating up alot of their time and energy right now. To avoid a public flogging for missing the meeting, Joe and Lisa hosted a group run this past weekend and thanks to all that attended (missing the OSU game even!). Lisa has decided that Shannon Fisher is much like her 8 year old son...if there is a puddle to run through, a mound of snow to leap though, why, but why, would you choose to run on bare road? The group run was great and we did the Double Trouble race course. Lots of group runs are coming up to be sure to check the group run page.
November 7, 2008: Can we get a big round of applause for Marsha Clifford? She has taken the newsletter to a whole new level. Great job. Be sure to check out group runs and upcoming events for new info. A reminder that we need some RSVP's for the November cardiac screen. Also, welcome to John McCullough, a new member that found us via the net!
November 1, 2008: Well the Wicked Fun Weenie Run lived up to its name. As a member only event, we met at the Chalet in the CVNP. We had a group run just shy of 5 miles. Newbies to trail running tried out the "rabbit's hole, ice box, and the Sound of Music Hills". Afterwards everyone enjoyed weenies, hamburgers, chili, meatballs, potato soup, chips, dip, etc. The club provided weenies and burgers with all the fixings and club memebrs brought a potluck dish. We were very happy to have new member Ebbie Radcliff show up. She got the trouper of the day award for hanging in the group run. She had just recently completed the 10k at the Towpath. She signed up at our booth at the Expo. We hope to see her at more events.
The following day Club members volunteered at an aid station at Roy Heger's ultramarathon. There was a double marathon and a 60k fun run. For the fun run a challenge had to be completed to earn the right to cut a page out of a book to shave time off your finish time. Feedback has been that our station was a runner favorite. Our station required runners to air guitar to AC/DC. EVERYONE did it and had a ball. One runner was a huge AC/DC fan and left everyone's sides hurting after his very authentic Angus Young imitation. Other runners really got into their perfomances, some with the traditional "white man's overbite" and whiplash inducing headbanging. Sign us up for next year. We had as much fun as the runners. Special thanks to Michele Coleman, Joe Herbert, Becky Steiner, Bob and Betty Phillips, and the Fisher family. By the way Becky, NNNNiiiiccccee timing on the walnut salad. We're still waiting for a taste! And Shannon, with cold season just around the corner, you may want to hold on to all that home grown antibiotics!!!!
While some members helped out at the race, Lisa Herbert and Chuck Damman volunteered at the YMCA's FAmily Health Fair. The YMCA offers many great programs to the community and Chuck is involved on the board. Lisa set up a booth in conjunction with her office for a Fit Kid Challenge. We brought a treadmill and a mat; kids had the opportunity to run on the treadmill, do sit ups and push ups, and sign a fit kid pledge promising to eat well, drink lots of water, be active daily, and get lots of rest. they were given a certificate marking thier accomplishments. Thanks to Chuck for giving us a head's up on such a great to educate kids about health and fitness.
Lastly, welcome to Molly Morgan and Colleen Easton (the entire Easton family has joined but I need to get the rest of their names) of Medina. They are new members who found us via the Gazette and web respectivly. We know that Colleen has had a big month having just completed her first marathon at the Towpath coming in under goal! We are happy to have you both.
Any of you that have read the new Runner's World are familiar with the dangers of heart disease and runners. Don't forget about our screening coming in November! We will be forwarding a sample results to members so you can see what the test is about. Good luck to the Cliffords who are going to be at the Inland Trail race tomorrow!
October 24, 2008: It was a chilly start for the Columbus Marathon. A 34 degree temp, but hardly a breeze is what greeted the runners at the starting line. It was ideal conditions and it showed. Jean Budowanec ran a PR of 4:33, which I believe knocks about 1/2 hour off her best. Her finish line pictures are fabulous! She could not look happier! Dan Derosha ran a 3:34 which is also a PR. Lisa Herbert took a 1/2 hour off her best time setting a new PR of 3:57 (finish line pics...not so fabulous...cried the entire way down the chute). The following day she was quoted "I'm happy. I can't walk down stairs, but I'm happy". Denise Young get the "Holy Crap" moment of the race. Denise has been running for several years and back when she was a mere mortal she ran two marathons, one just over 5 hours and one just under 5 hours. Then she got fast, got skinny, and got really good. She focused on shorter distances and as many of you know from her results this year...she's freakin' fast! She decided to make a go of the marathon and try to qualify for Boston, a 3:45 needed to do so. (Her husband Matt ran Boston this past year). Here's the Holy Crap moment. She ran a 3:26! She took 1 1/2 HOURS off her best time. If she gets any faster we are going to start making her pee in a cup!!!! Seriously, knowing her well, she worked REALLY hard to achieve that time and we wish her all the best in Boston!
October 15, 2008: Congrats to John Gorsek for being named Volunteer of the Year by the Medina YWCA. John has been honored for his work with the Sizzler Race, the Schoolhouse Run 4 Fun and a number of community events.
Don't forget the Ohio Club Team Challenge! This race is only open to members of a running club. An email was sent earlier this month with an attachment for this race. It is a 10k where you run as a team. In Open teams, the top 5 runners score. In a Masters team the top 3 score. Scoring is cumulative according to finish, low score wins. Great amenities! November 9, 2008, sign up at www.columbusrunning.com/t3.htm.
October 7, 2008: Good luck to anyone doing the Towpath full/half. Thanks to the efforts of Frank Dwyer we will be represented by a booth at the Expo! Also upcoming is the Columbus Marathon which will have members Jean Budowanec, Abra Weise, Lisa Herbert, Denise Young, and Dan Derosha running the full marathon.
Don't forget to check UPCOMING EVENTS!
We need more pictures! Marsha has been using more photos in the newsletter so send some her way. We'd like people to be able to put names to faces!
We had an awesome Sept meeting with Joe Booth speaking! Also great was the OPEN FLOOR whoch allowed recently completed Akron Marathon/half/relay people share their stories.
Some recently heard quotes...funny, inspirational, or otherwise....
1. Pain is certain but suffering is optional. Run smart and well prepared.
2. It is not all about what you do in the race tomorrow. It is what you did to get there. - Ryan Hall
3. If you're going to be a distance runner, you better get comfortable with the idea of puking. - Shanon Fisher's quote form Connie Gardner :)
If anyone sees Lillian Damman at a race don't sing the Rocky song to her sing "Hangin' Tough" or "You got the right stuff" to her! New Kids on the Block, hee, hee, hee :) inside joke!
September 28, 2008: What a showing we made in Akron! In the half marathon Lillian Damman ran a 1:55.59, Dan Derosha 1:33.59, and Jade and Jim Fisher ran a 2:39.21. For the HOLY CRAP moment of the half...Matt Young ran the half after "kinda training" for it. He took THIRD OVERALL! He got to do the whole stage/medal presentation in what he describes as a surreal moment. He was not but about a mintue behind the first and second runners and boasted a new PR of 1:16.49. Time Warner will be broadcasting the race starting the 29th on its local channels and repeating it periodically.
In the marathon, first timers Ladd and Marsha Clifford came in right on target at 3:52.23 and 4:12.30 respectively. Judging from her splits, Marsha felt great because she really picked it up at the end. Chuck Damman's return to the marathon brought him a 3:39.11. Frank Dwyer ran a 3:58.23. Mind you Frank runs marathons like most people run a 5k to prepare for his next 100 miler. Becky "Wildwoman" Steiner was a surprise name amongst the finishers. Someone probably asked her last week if she wanted to run. That woman will do anything! So Becky, a big "NNNiiiiicccce" to your ever consistent 4:35.38 finish. Kim Albright decided only this week to go through with this marathon as she's been dealing with an injury. She ran a 4:51.39 and should be commended for being such a trooper. For the HOLY CRAP moment of the marathon....Randy Albright recently realized that his training times were putting him in a qualifying position so he decided to go for it. Needing a 3:45.59 to qualify for Boston, Randy ran a 3:45.03 on his second marathon (his first being last year at Akron). Awesome job Randy! For those that ran relays, I can't get your times without your team names so be sure to send your info. We will expect all of you to post on the forum about your day and for the marathoners, be sure to go to www.marathonguide.com to put in your review of Akron. Kudos to Michele Coleman for volunteering at the medical tent at mile 22. word is that she was busy. That's one tough mile, I'm sure people were happy to see her there!
September 25, 2008: A big GOOD LUCK to all our runners who are taking on Akron. To my knowledge we have marathoners Ladd and Marsha Clifford taking on the distance for a first time. Chuck Damman is making a come back run while his wife Lillian takes on the half. Jim Fisher will be running along side his wife Jade for her first half marathon (can you tell they're newlyweds?). Shannon Fisher will be running the anchor leg of a 5 man relay with Lisa Grafton taking on a 10k leg. Patrick Fisher is running the 15.5 mile leg of a two person relay. Kim and Randy Albright will be running the marathon, a feat that they also took on last year. Matt Young will be running the half marathon. If there is anyone else running email Lisa. Also, we will expect a forum posting regarding you all running!!!! We'd love to hear your experiences, especially the first timers. Also, don't forget the women's 8k championship the same morning. There are some amazing athletes participating and we'd love to hear some stories from that as well. To all of you....may the weather be fair, the wind at your back, and your feet swift. Enjoy your runs!
September 13, 2008: Well, haven't we been busy bees? There have been alot of stories to share through the past week. First, congrats to Shannon Fisher on a great run in Pennsylvania, winning her age group in a 50k, again. Also, we made a strong showing at the Buckeye half marathon. Chuck and Lillian Damman had great races. Chuck ran a 1:32 and that was after a 5 person pile up at the start. The event was not chip timed so there were some slower runners that tried to shave a few seconds off their time by jumping up front. All they accomplished was a crash and some bloodshed. Lillian wowed everyone by running a 1:49 for her half marathon debut. Some runners were using this race as a prep for their upcoming marathon. Chuck will be running Akron. Lillian will be doing the Akron half. Jean Budowanec ran a 2:00.30 and that was with having to wait for a train! She will be doing the Columbus marathon. Michele Coleman knocked a staggering 8 minutes off her half time from May clocking a 1:51. Denise Young, who came off a 70 mile week, ran a 1:34 as a prep for Columbus. Lisa Herbert ran a 1:52 to gear up for Columbus as well. Marsha and Ladd Clifford had their final race tune up in prep for Akron clocking a 2:05 and 1:43 respectively. Lisa, Marsha, and Ladd were at a high school reunion the night before but noted that they behaved with no partying! Everyone seemed to approve of the new course, even with the killer hill at the end. Conditions were cool for the double loop course and the skies opened up for the final miles of the race after a morning full of drizzle. There was a catered pasta dinner at 10 am with THE BEST sweet buns ever.
Also, you may have noticed some awesome changes in the newsletter this month. Lisa has asked Marsha to take over the newsletter beginning next month. This month was a collabrative effort with Lisa writing and Marsha making everything look cool. Lisa will still be contributing info, Running shorts, and Fueling Stations but feels confident that Marsha will do a great job. Marsha has proven herself to be a a devoted member and has worked hard to promote our young club. With Marsha doing the newsletter, Lisa can devote more time to keeping the website more current and Joe and Lisa can work on developing new things for the club.
Speaking of new things...we need volunteers to take a shift at the Towpath Expo respresenting the club at a table. Please contact Frank Dwyer via Roster. Also we need volunteers to help Roy at his race, ditto on the Roster. Lastly, we are lloking for a few people to help coordinate the Wicked Fun Weenie Run. Contact Joe and Lisa via Roster.
September 4, 2008: Sorry to be away so long folks! Start of school, youth football, marathon training,... you know the drill. To catch up...good luck to Denise Flores as she heads to Australia for the Sydney Marathon! Good luck to Shannon Fisher on her upcoming 50k in Pennsylvania! Also, good luck to all competeing in the Buckeye half, River Run half, the Akron Marathon, and the Towpath Marathon. All those months of training are coming to an end and we wish everyone a cool day, the wind at your back, and a PR! Very important info coming your way...member Roy Heger is organinzing a double marathon and a 37 mile "Fun Run". His Running with Scissors race generates money for three great causes, (one deals with human trafficing and enslavement, another is the the national parks, and the last is a scholarship fund). He needs volunteers for the aid stations. It is going to be a fun day. I will have more details posted soon as the paper with the details is at work and I am presently typing this from home! However, you can contact him directly via the Roster if you wish to volunteer!
August 13, 2008: Welcome to new member John Gorsek! John's name is well known in Medina, by both race results and his successful career as a CPA (any advice on getting running shoes as a tax write off?). We are happy to have him in the club and look forward to any ideas that he may have to help the club grow.
August 5, 2008: Member Steve Marshall made the front page of sports in the Medina Gazette. The story coverd Steve's triumph over non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and his dedication and love of running. Hopefully, everyone got a chance to read this inspiring story. Steve, your fighting spirit, love of family, and dedication to your running serve as an example to us all and we are proud to have a you as a memebr of this club.
Mile after mile after mile...Congrats to Frank Dwyer and Roy Heger for yet another 100 miler under their belts. It was a fairly warm weekend for the Burning River 100 but as you can see from the Burning River website photos, everyone looked like they enjoyed themselves. Frank and Roy, you have a caloric deficit my friends...beer and pizza....beer and pizza.
Is it something in the water around here? We had a significant showing of members at the Buckeye 50k. The entire Fisher family, Frank Dwyer, Becky Steiner, and Denise Flores (who by the way set an age group record) all had great runs. Ultra running is going strong in Medina!
The feedback we've been receiving on the race has been great! For the first year there were only a few small glitches that are easily tweaked for next year. Leftover post run treats went home with volunteers and non-perishables (safety pins, pens, duck tape, etc. are tucked away for next year). Personal favorite moments of the race by Lisa Herbert was the AMAZING team of Bucks and Bees who were all of 10 years old and were simply rockets in size 3 shoes! Also enjoyed was the subtle "Niiiiiiccccce" by Becky "wildwoman" Steiner with nearly every finisher announced. Becky has an amazing talent of making everyone feel that they ran a personal best no matter what the clock says. By the way Becky, good luck in your triathlon next weekend!
August 3, 2008: The first Double Trouble Road Race ran at 7:30 am, August 3, 2008. It was a beautiful summer morning with a great turn out for a first time race. The volunteer support was outstanding and a big thanks to all who came out. Please check out the race page for results. The overall feedback on race day was "well organized, fun, great police support, good food, quick results, would definitely do again next year". How could we complain about comments like that!?! Having one under our belts we know how to make next year even better!
07-14-08: Thanks to everyone who helped update the roster. Some handwritings were hard to read so I repaired as best I could. Your replies helped tremendously. The last repair will be the Links page which I will repair once we get back from Cape Cod. Also, great news...the registrations are pouring in! Everyday we get new people signing up for our race. Members are encouraged to run so sign up today!!!!
06-28-08: Due to a significant server issue our site experienced a major crash on 06-28-08. Lisa is going to require some significant prescription medication to get through this one! After a lengthy conversation with tech support somewhere in the Pacific Rim, it was determined that the info could not be retrieved. Seven of our pages have to be completely redone from scratch. After sitting catatonic for a few hours Lisa began piecing back our fractured site. Please bear with us while we get things back to normal. Since our Roster was also lost in this crash, please double check that your info is correct when it is back up. Thanks for your understanding and patience. - Lisa
